my work, my life, and everything in between

Saturday, Saturday to Sunday!

After a wonderful Friday night celebrating my friend’s birthday, drinking wine, eating spaghetti and yellow green beans, and cathcing up with many of my friends, I was pumped for Saturday night! My sister Kelly came home this past weekend, it was great to see her, although we didn’t get to hang out more. I was really excited for the God Party in Laurel Canyon Satuday night, however, as you may have experience yourself, when one parent leaves town the other parent seems to assume a very strict rule over what your plans are. My dad included. He put his foot down very fast about the God Party. So Saturday night was spent obsessing over one of my new favorite recording artists, Imran Kahn. He performs punjabi. I, of course, also went on my nightly run with my dear friend Rachel, we’re on our way to looking very hot! Eventhough I wasn’t out and roaming around LA, I still managed to stay up until 4 AM chatting on the phone and texting my friends (always a memorable experience). Sunday morning I went with my mom and her best friend Denise (Auntie Nise) to Michael Levine’s in the Garment District in Downtown Los Angeles. It was a very successful trip, and I found the perfect fabric to construct my Pandora inspired evening gown for the Visual Arts Spring Fashion Show. I now have between now and May 23 to construct a fantastic gown. And hopefully, like last year, my dress will appear in the runway place of honor, the very last piece to be shown at the end of the runway show! I will post pictures of my progress. Sunday was a visually overwhelming yet satisfying day. On my way home my friend Rachel (my running buddy) called me to ask for my help with her photo project. I, of course, said yes! She allowed me to style her to the point where she looked like a cross between Ke$ha, Lady Gaga, and Alice (in Wonderland). We spent several hours shooting. Then it was time for my family’s dinner, which works like clockwork. We eat everday at 6:15 PM. I ended my night with a nice run to Starbucks with Rachel. She still had her makeup on, so when she ordered her Venti Iced Black Tea lemonade she stated her name was “Ke$ha.” The barista didn’t flinch. Thank you all for your supoport!

Music, cake, krumpfest!

When my friend Natasha read me our Gemini horoscope late thursday night, just as I had returned at 10:30 PM from my late-night run, I was skeptical. My horoscope for February 26, 2010 seemed too good to be true. It called for adventure, a new friend, endless fun, and great company. I spent Friday morning celebrating all of our successes with my dear friends, and we dined on homemade strawberry cake and breakfast from Johnny’s Kitchen. The day went rather fast, and was actually pretty fun! As I am blogging I don’t remember much more about my Friday, however Friday night was the best night I have had in a long time. I began the night attending Amnesty Coffeehouse 2010 at Westridge School for Girls in Pasadena. I ram friends with many Westridge girls so it was nice to see all of them, eating, drinking, and socialzing. There were several great performances, fantastic trickets for sale, as well as student artwork for sale. Although the real fun happened just outside the doors. The Krumpfest! A new friend, Matt, who goes to St. Francis in La Canada had decided to teach us all how to krump, it was a hot mess, and we look like flailing birds, but it was fun nonetheless. I reconnected with old friends, and made many new friends. Overall, the night was a success!

6 Miles

As I sit in Starbucks, with my morning Venti Hazelnut Hot Chocolate (no whip, of course) I remembered that I had completely forgotten to post anything yesterday. Yesterday, was quite an exhausting day. Even when I miss school, I still have to wake up ridiculously early. I was up at 6 AM – getting ready to drive to Santa Barbara for a funeral. A dear family friend, Michael (Alex’s uncle), had passed away. The services were beautiful, although I may need to stay away from Catholic funerals for a bit. It was quite awkward when you are the only person in the entire church that doesnt know the prayers, or hymns, or when to stand up or sit down. The entire day was nice. We were able to see family friends that w haven’t seen in years. It was also great to see my best friend, Alex, and his sister and of course Mom and Pop (their grandparents). It was also great to see my sister, Kelly, who attends UCSB, so she was a hop, skip, and a jump away  – so she too attended. We’ve known the Castillo family for my entire life, we’re now considered as their white cousins from Pasadena. After the funeral and internment services, and the slightly awkward reception, we left for home. I fell asleep as soon as we pulled away from the curb, and didn’t wake until we were passing the Rose Bowl. we still had one more item to on our list for the day to check off – the DMV. Now, as a 17 year-old, second semester Senior, you’d think I would have my license by now. This most certainly is not the case. In fact, my permit expired back in September 2009. Hoewever, as of next Tuesday, I will have a renewed permit and then within the next month I hope to have my license, just in time for Spring Break! Anyway, the DMV basically is one big shit show. Here I am, dressed head-to-toe in designer formal wear, coming home from a funeral, and I have to walk inside the DMV to get the appropriate forms and the trusty DMV Driver’s Handbook so I am able to study. To avoid a major awkward situation I dialed my friend Vince to talk to me on the phone as I worked my way through the hoards of people waiting in line. It was still awkward. Although the black security gaurd who had cheered me on during my first permit test was still there, directing traffic, but she did turn to me and smile. So next Tuesday, March 2, at 9:40 AM (supposedly) keep your fingers crossed for me, and pray to baby Jesus that I pass the permit test, so that I may be on my way to my license. When I got home, I was absolutely emotionally and physically drained. Nonetheless, I had the yearn to go fro a jog. I met up with my friend, Conor (Congratulations on being accepted into the University of Michigan, by the way) for a 4 mile jog. I then had remembered that I had promised my fellow housewife, Rachel, that I would run with her, so let’s add 2 more miles to that. The bottom line, I was sore as ever, but felt great! This whole exercise regiment has really helped with my sleeping habits, and has encouraged, well, better eating habits. We’ll see how long this lasts. We’ll pretend it is Wednesday, so go turn on NBC and watch Law & Order: SVU for me, as I do homework. I really need to spend a day watching all the shit in my TiVo. Heads up, Kathy Griffin (yes, the crazy red-headed comedian) will be guest starring next week on Law & Order: SVU next Wednesday! Finally, I just want to share with everyone how excited I am for the Real Housewives of Orange County tonight! Team Vicki Forever!

Dancing in the dark

In my attempt to stay healthy, or at least thin, I have decided that it would be best to skip the regiment of going to 24 Hour Fitness and jog for 45 minutes everynight! Exercise produces endorphins, and endorphins make you happy, right? Well, lets hope! Tonight is my first night out jogging in a very long time! I’ll have my two jogging buddies Rachel and Conor to brave the dark with me. Wish me luck! Tonight, I also say a fond farewell to those unhealthy munchies I keep stashed around my room and in my kitchen! It’s a new…week…um…well, a new me!

Métro, boulot, dodo!

After a spectacular Monday afternoon spent with a couple of my friends, relaxing and then eating out at Costco – I was waiting for karma to bite me in the ass on Tuesday. I was so exhausted Monday afternoon I could barely make it from the car to the front door. I finally managed to work up enough strength to do my homework, well I didn’t finish it until 3 AM. And getting up at 6 AM is not delightful after only a few hours of sleep. I made my morning round to Starbucks at 7 AM (more on my Starbucks obsession soon!). I spiced up my order a bit and order a Venti Cinnamon Dolce Hot Chocolate, no whip of course! And extra hot! My favorite barista, Christina, hasn’t been around in a while, but the new morning barista finally learned my name! I sat in my usual corner in Starbucks and knocked out! I woke up at 7:45 – cuddling my backpack and jacket, and went to class. As we had all guessed, only half of my AP Government class showed up (we had a Supreme Court case project due today). My AP Government class is the class where I can start the day off right, making my terrible, considerably stereotypical, potentially racist (and all of the above) comments! It’s the best! We tried to convince our teacher to take us to Starbucks, but that was a major fail. To move this post along, French IV was fun! I fell asleep during our philosophical existentialist conversation (as I always do). Then it was time for Chemistry! Now, science was never my favorite subject, but I really enjoyed my teacher, well, the teacher she was back in October. She passed out a quiz for us to take, and good old me, I knocked out and drooled on my quiz. And did anyone think to wake me up? No, because they said I looked so peaceful and content with life when I’m sleeping! Thanks guys! Lunch, MMM. FOOD! Or more like my only time of the day to convince the student body that I’m not manorexic. But then again, I did order a small salad and an arnold palmer to drink. Tisk tisk. But before class, my partner in crime, my ghetto-fabulous diva friend and I stalked up on vending machine goodies. Working on our painstaking pointillism project we have become increasigly bored with every stroke of our markers. Sadly, it took us 6 months to realize that we both had laptops and we could play a DVD during class. So, like us, we put in “Sorority Row.” We’re quite the trashy, corny, horror movie type-people. We decided that it was the best  Tuesday art class that we’ve ever had. I’m off to go pick up dinner at Egg Roll Express, then it’ll be time to go for a jog with the “girl next-door!”

Good Morning!

I think my new addiction is adding new posts to my blog. My goal is to write one post per day, unless it’s a very exciting, eventful day! I must say that this weekend has been incredibly, well, different. I had a wonderful time with my La Salle friends on Friday. We all had a little fun before, then went to the Santa Anita Mall to see Martin Scorceses’ “Shutter Island.” Personally, I thought the movie was awful. But you’ll have to see if for yourself! I slept in on Saturday morning and then went to get my “hair did” at Karin’s in Sierra Madre – I suggest everyone try it out sometime! I then danced in the car with my mom on the way to CBTL (Coffee Bean & Tea Leaf). I did nothing the rest of the day. I want to congratudalte my friend Meeghan Tirtasaputra on her CD Release Party in Beverly Hills! I heard it was amazing! Later Saturday night I was able to hang out with my Westridge friends and we went to a little party in Altadena together, but left too early. Now, it’s time for homework, and to watch the people that are participating in the Pasadena Marathon, who are running on my street! Maybe I’ll pull up a chair, open the windows, and cheer them on! Have a wonderful day everyone!

80 more school days left!

College

As of last Saturday I have officially applied to the Rhode Island School of Design, Parsons The New School for Design, Otis College of Art and Design, Brown University, Yale University, University of Souther California, UC Los Angles, and UC Santa Barbara, as well as Emerson College. It has been such a relief to be done with college applications. I ended up spedning upwards of $1100 on application fees, sending test scores, and overnighting packages cross-country! Hopefully, it’ll all be worth it. But like my mentor has said, no matter where I’ll end up, I’ll most likely be wearing the RISD sweatshirt she got me for Christmas. Thank you to the following people for all their help through this entire five month process: Linda Hitchcock, Lonée Lona, Diana Hernandez, Leslie Karten, Javier Armijo, my mom and dad, and all my friends who have supported me and kept me going. Thank you all, I love you so much!

Within the next 50 days or so I should hear back from all of the 9 schools I applied for, check back to see what happens!

Welcome!

Hello everyone! Welcome to my blog. This blog will eventually be a place for me to display all my artwork, share my random thoughts, post reviews on restaurants, movies, as well as share with you some stories about my life. I will admit that I have neglected my website for years now, it appears that for the past three years I have been preparing for college. However, as of Saturday, I am officially done with college applications. I ended up applying to the Rhode Island School of Design, Parsons The New School for Design, Otis College of Art and Design, Brown University, Yale University, University of Souther California, UC Los Angles, and UC Santa Barbara, as well as Emerson College. Hopefully next year, I’ll be enjoying everything New England has to offer. In the coming week, I’ll upload my portfolio that I submitted to all these wonderful schools! As a second semester senior, my interest now is to relax, have  fun, and enjoy the next few months with my friends and family.

Thank you,

Matthew J. Bohne
